Glossary of terms used in The Kulak's Daughter:

kulak - wealthy peasant (wealthy meaning: owns land and hires outside help)
OGPU - the secret police. Later morphed into the GPU (1934) and then the KGB (1954)
Gulag - an acronym for 'Chief Directorate or Administration of Corrective Labour Camps and Colonies' Basically, a 'corrective labour camp'.
Communism - a political theory "advocating the elimination of private property" (Webster's Dictionary) Karl Marx wrote "The Communist Manifesto"
Collective farm - "a farm formed from many small holdings collected into a single unit for joint operation under government supervision" (Webster's Dictionary)
Proletariat - a worker
lice - a parasite that sucks blood
bedbugs - are bloodsucking parasites, causing big, itchy welts.
typhus - "a severe human febrile disease marked by high fever, stupor alternating with deleium, intense headaches and a dark red rash, transmitted esp. by body lice" (Webster's Dictionary)
